Radiation dermatitis
● Symptoms and Causes
The high-energy radiation delivered during radiotherapy causes direct and indirect ionization events that result in damage to the cellular macromolecules, primarily in the form of radiation-induced DNA damage. Through this DNA-damaging mechanism, IR exposure affects virtually every cellular component of the skin, particularly the epidermal keratinocytes, including their stem and progenitor cells.
